Silhouette Art by Carew Rice
Ridin’ High
The setting for Dubose Hayward’s book, Porgy was 1930’s Charleston. When the book was adapted into the famous musical Porgy and Bess by George Gershwin, my grandfather was asked to create the cover artwork for the original playbill. In the story, Porgy was handicapped, and thus rode in a goat cart. This hand- cut silhouette from 1964 is a later version of the silhouette that Grandaddy made for the original playbill.
